Kaadu Directed by :

Suneesh Vadakumbadan

Producer(s) or Production Company :

KSFDC

Country :

INDIA

Language :

MALAYALAM

Year :

2025

jury Citation :

The Jury commends Kaadu for its visually immersive and socially urgent portrayal of indigenous communities confronting displacement under conservation regimes. Blending poetic aesthetics with lived reality, the film foregrounds themes of migration, identity, and environmental justice with empathy and cinematic sensitivity. The narrative powerfully contrasts the deep, spiritual connection of the tribe with nature - symbolized through moments such as their communion with birds - against the cold rigidity of bureaucratic systems that marginalize and uproot them. The film thoughtfully explores humanity’s exploitation of nature while underscoring the importance of reciprocity and coexistence. Technically accomplished and thematically rich, Kaadu balances lyrical beauty with hard truths. Though it occasionally romanticizes forest life, its emotional honesty, social relevance, and strong cinematic craft make it a compelling and moving cinematic intervention.

The Jury makes a Special Mention to Sarkeet for its thoughtful use of a road journey as a powerful metaphor for emotional transformation and inner migration. What begins as a simple transit gradually unfolds into a layered exploration of identity, family bonds, trauma, and contemporary social realities. Through sincere and well-balanced ensemble performances, the film captures subtle psychological shifts with authenticity and sensitivity, including a nuanced portrayal of ADHD that adds depth and empathy to the narrative. The grounded direction makes effective use of the confined travel space as an emotional crucible, allowing tensions, confessions, and personal reckonings to emerge organically. While the cinematic elements remain largely functional, the strength of the storytelling, thematic richness, and emotional honesty elevate the experience. By transforming an ordinary journey into a deeply human and reflective experience, the film leaves a lasting impact, resonating strongly with lived realities and inner struggles of modern life.

We sincerely thank the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy and the Bengaluru International Film Festival team for providing us the opportunity to be part of this enriching cinematic journey. It has been a privilege to witness and engage with such powerful regional storytelling.
