Synopsis

ONKARA (The Ascension) recounts the life of Karumban, a dual practitioner of the Theyyam art and medicine, belonging to the Mavilan community, a marginalized tribe in northern Kerala. The film delves into the challenges faced by Karumban and the broader Mavilan community, highlighting their poverty. Despite dedicating his life to Theyyam, Karumban's aspirations of becoming the Ooru's chieftain like his father go unfulfilled. Tragedy strikes when his daughter elopes and meets a tragic fate. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Mavilan's language, Markkodi. Karumban's poignant journey underscores the harsh impact of societal rejection and the perceived abandonment by the divine during his moment of need. The film is enriched with traditional tribal music and performances.
