Synopsis

An aunt and her niece who’ve never met before drive to Lapland to empty a house they’ve inherited. Turns out the withdrawn and distrusting aunt had been a victim of the assimilation policies and the niece has to make a big decision. By taking interest in each other they find value in themselves and their roots.

KATJA GAURILOFF

Director and screenwriter Katja Gauriloff the first ever Skolt Sámi language fiction film, JE’VIDA (2023), tells the story of the painful history of forced Finnishization from the perspective of one Skolt Sámi woman. Gauriloff has worked with the theme of Skolt Sámi in his documentary A SHOUT INTO THE WIND (2006) and Kaisa’s ENCHANTED FOREST (2016), with the latter receiving both international awards and the Jussi award for the best documentary film. JE’VIDA premiered in New York at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it competed for the International Narrative Competition award.
