Do Bigha Zamin follows Shambhu, a poor farmer fighting to save his small plot of land from an exploitative landlord. Given a short deadline to repay his debt, he travels to the city with his young son to earn money. Forced into harsh urban labor as a rickshaw-puller while his son shines shoes, they confront poverty, humiliation, and fragile hope. Though they ultimately lose their land to industrial development, the film powerfully affirms their resilience, dignity, and unbroken moral strength amid relentless social injustice.

ಶಂಭು ಎಂಬ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬಡ ರೈತ, ತನ್ನ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಜಮೀನನ್ನು ದುರಾಸೆಯ ಜಮೀನ್ದಾರನಿಂದ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಹೋರಾಡುವ ಕಥೆಯೇ ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ. ತನ್ನ ಸಾಲವನ್ನು ತೀರಿಸಲು ಜಮೀನ್ದಾರನು ಬಹಳ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಸಮಯ ನೀಡಿದಾಗ, ಶಂಭು ಹಣ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಲು ತನ್ನ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಗನೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಮಗನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶಂಭು, ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ರಿಕ್ಷಾ ಎಳೆಯುವ ಕಷ್ಟದ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾನೆ; ಅವನ ಮಗ ಬೂಟ್ ಪಾಲಿಶ್ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಬಡತನ, ಅವಮಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಹಸಿವಿನ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಭರವಸೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಹೋರಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕೀಕರಣದ ಅಬ್ಬರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಜಮೀನನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರೂ, ಆ ಅನ್ಯಾಯದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಅವರು ತೋರುವ ಧೈರ್ಯ, ಘನತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮನುಷ್ಯತ್ವದ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಸೋಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Bimal Roy (1909–1966), widely known as the “Silent Master,” was a pioneering Indian filmmaker who played a defining role in shaping the golden age of Indian cinema. Born in former East Bengal, he began his career in Calcutta as a photographer and later as an assistant cameraman at New Theatres, where his visual sensitivity stood out. He eventually moved to Bombay and founded Bimal Roy Productions. Blending poetic realism with strong social conscience, his films remain landmarks of Indian cinema, including UDAYER PATHEY (1944), PARINEETA (1953), DEV DAS (1955), MADHUMATI (1958), SUJATA (1959) and BANDINI (1963).
