Max Ophüls (1902–1957) was a German-born filmmaker renowned for his graceful camera movements, emotional depth, and elegant storytelling. After fleeing Nazi Germany, he built an international career across Europe and Hollywood. His major films include LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN (1948), LA RONDE (1950), LE PLAISIR (1952), LOLA MONTÈS (1955). He received the Golden Lion at the Venice FF for the screenplay of LA RONDE, a rare honor for its time. Though underappreciated during his life, Ophüls is now regarded as a master whose influence can be seen in filmmakers across generations.
