Set in rural Sri Lanka, the movie tells the heartbreaking tale of two sisters whose dreams come to nought in the face of insurmountable class barriers. Kusum falls in love with Nimal, an upper-class boy in whose house she works. Nimal’s outraged mother fires Kusum, ending the couple’s romance. Her happy-go-lucky sister Soma’s dreams of becoming a beauty queen are shattered when she becomes pregnant. The story progresses as a lyrical exploration of the end of innocence and romantic dreams.

ಶ್ರೀಲಂಕಾದ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ, ಸಮಾಜದ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಬಡವರ ನಡುವಿನ ಗೋಡೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸಹೋದರಿಯರ ಕನಸುಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ನುಚ್ಚುನೂರಾಗುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬ ಕರುಣಾಜನಕ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಸುಮ್ ಎಂಬ ಹುಡುಗಿ ತಾನು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ಮನೆತನದ ನಿಮಲ್ ಎಂಬುವವನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆದರೆ ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿದ ನಿಮಲ್‌ನ ತಾಯಿ ಕೋಪದಿಂದ ಕುಸುಮ್‌ಳನ್ನು ಕೆಲಸದಿಂದ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವರ ಪ್ರೇಮಕಥೆಗೆ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಇತ್ತ ಕುಸುಮ್‌ಳ ಸಹೋದರಿ ಸೋಮಾ, ಸದಾ ಲವಲವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಇರುತ್ತಾ ತಾನು ಬ್ಯೂಟಿ ಕ್ವೀನ್ ಆಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕನಸು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವಳು ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿಯಾದಾಗ ಅವಳ ಸುಂದರ ಕನಸುಗಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಡೆದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾವು ಮುಗ್ಧತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಕನಸುಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಕಮರಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Sumitra Peries (1934–2023) was a pioneering Sri Lankan filmmaker and one of the country’s most respected directors, often regarded as a key figure in shaping Sinhala art cinema. She studied filmmaking at the London School of Film Technique (1957–1959) and began her career working closely with her husband, director Lester James Peries. Her notable films include YAHANUYA (1979), GANGA ADDARA (1980) and SAKMAN MALUWA (2003), known for their emotional depth and literary elegance. GEHENU LAMA is her directorial debut marking a turning point in Sri Lankan cinema with its sensitive portrayal of women and family life.
